Scott Minter was an avid runner, and unexpectedly passed away at age 29. His family started a scholarship fund at Philomath High School (PHS) from memorial contributions made in his memory. In addition, his high school cross-country coach Paul Mariman was still coaching at PHS and had started the Timbertown cross-country meet each October at the high school. The proceeds from the meet were donated to Scott’s scholarship fund. When Paul died, his family requested that donations be made to Scott’s scholarship fund in Paul’s honor, and people continue to donate. In December 2000, after Paul Mariman’s death, Scott’s family transferred the fund to Benton Community Foundation.

This scholarship is given to one Philomath High School cross-country runner each year. The object is to support someone who isn’t necessarily the number one runner, but who is a team player and gives encouragement to other runners—something that was very much a part of Scott’s way of life.
